Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, praised the implementation of international climate commitments by Algérie. During his assessment on 22 October 2026, he noted the progress achieved by the nation in aligning its domestic policies with global environmental standards. This recognition focuses on the long-term environmental strategy adopted by the government to meet its obligations under the established international framework. The UN official noted the importance of such alignment as a critical component for maintaining the integrity of the international environmental system.

National Climate Commitments Submitted

Algérie submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution (CDN) to the UN secretariat in June 2026. This formal filing details the country's updated framework for addressing global environmental challenges within the established international system. The submission of this document represents a procedural step in the country's engagement with the UN secretariat. The document outlines a full set of actions and policies that the government has committed to undertake as part of its participation in global climate efforts.

Government officials integrated a specific objective to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 into the national climate strategy. This target serves as a primary benchmark for the medium-term environmental policy of Algérie. By establishing this specific date and objective, the government has created a measurable goal that allows for the tracking of environmental progress. This commitment is intended to guide the development of various sectors, ensuring that the national policy remains consistent with the broader environmental objectives established under the international framework.

Simon Stiell, secrétaire exécutif de la Convention-cadre des Nations unies sur les changements climatiques, identified the scope of these efforts during his assessment. He characterized the policy trajectory as "la vision nationale à long terme de l’Algérie, jusqu’à l’horizon 2050, visant à soutenir la transition vers une croissance bas carbone et à renforcer la résilience face aux effets du changement climatique." This long-term national vision seeks to facilitate a structural transition toward low-carbon economic growth while simultaneously improving national resilience against environmental shifts.

The vision extending to 2050 provides a strategic roadmap for the country. It encompasses a range of initiatives designed to shift the economic model of Algérie toward sustainability. By focusing on low-carbon growth, the government aims to decouple economic development from high levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Simultaneously, the inclusion of resilience measures acknowledges the necessity of preparing for environmental changes. This dual approach of mitigation and adaptation forms the core of the strategy that Simon Stiell reviewed during his visit. The commitment to these long-term goals reflects the ongoing efforts of the government to institutionalize environmental policy within its legislative and economic structures. Through the integration of these 2035 and 2050 targets, Algérie continues to refine its approach to the international requirements set forth by the UN secretariat.
