President Tebboune Orders Market Reforms and Infrastructure Expansion

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered an investigation into the role of meat importers in monopolizing and raising prices. This directive aims to address concerns regarding market manipulation and the escalating costs of essential food items. Officials must now identify specific practices that have contributed to market instability and high retail prices for consumers.

The government also received instructions to draft a law designed to strictly regulate intermediaries operating between producers and consumers. Officials intend for this legislation to reduce the influence of middlemen in the supply chain to ensure more direct pricing. Authorities expect these measures to stabilize the domestic food market and protect the interests of the public.

New Measures to Curb Inflation

The Ministry of Internal Trade plans to establish a system for capping prices and profit margins on vegetables, legumes, pasta, and meat. This regulatory framework intends to limit retail costs for these essential food items across the country.

The Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Internal Trade, and the Digitalization Commission will jointly create a digital database to monitor price fluctuations. This technological tool aims to provide authorities with real-time data to identify market irregularities. Officials expect that the integration of these systems will improve oversight of supply chains and prevent price gouging. By standardizing margins and tracking retail trends, the government seeks to enforce transparency in the distribution of goods from producers to the public. These efforts represent a shift toward centralized monitoring of essential commodities to stabilize the domestic economy.

Advancing National Railway Infrastructure

The mining railway project connecting Bled El Hadba to the port of Annaba is currently under development. This infrastructure initiative serves as a primary link for the transport of mineral resources from the interior to the coastal export hub.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the immediate launch of the railway project connecting Laghouat, El Meniaa, In Salah, and Tamanrasset. This line is designed to extend the national rail network into the southern regions, facilitating transport and logistics across these cities.

Authorities have also authorized direct negotiation contracts for connecting new seawater desalination plants in Chlef, Mostaganem, and Tlemcen to the existing utility and transport networks. These contracts aim to expedite the integration of the facilities into the national infrastructure grid.
