Spanish Institute Urges Retaliatory Stance Against Morocco, Citing Regional Power Plays

The Institute for Hispano Studies (المعهد الإسباني للدراسات) called for Madrid to strengthen its relations with Algeria and oppose Rabat's projects, advocating a retaliatory stance against Morocco. The Institute made its position public on Monday, August 3rd, through a post on its X account. The Spanish organization urged its government to reinforce ties with Algeria as a counter to perceived Moroccan regional power plays, specifically noting the need for Spain to adopt a more assertive posture in its foreign policy.

Advocating for Counter-Measures

The Institute for Hispano Studies proposed three specific solutions for Spain to counter what it described as Moroccan threats. These measures included supporting the independence of the Rif region, backing the independence of Western Sahara, and facilitating Algeria's access to the Atlantic Ocean. These proposals show a desire for Spain to actively challenge Morocco's regional influence. Meanwhile, Spanish strategic analysts have voiced their rejection of what they perceive as the Pedro Sánchez government's submission to Moroccan provocations. These provocations include alleged espionage targeting Spanish officials and journalists, in addition to the reported dispatch of waves of illegal immigrants towards Spanish territories. The analysts contend that Spain should adopt a firmer posture in response to these actions, rather than acquiescing to what they view as aggressive tactics. They argue that a more strong response is necessary to protect Spanish interests and sovereignty.

Algeria: A Strategic Alternative

The Institute for Hispano Studies argued that Spain's interests with Algeria surpass those with the Moroccan regime. This assertion is based on a comparison of the two North African nations' strategic importance and resources. Algeria, the largest country in Africa, spans an area of 2.38 million square kilometers, making its territory more than five times larger than Morocco's. This vast geographical expanse offers significant strategic advantages. Algeria's population also exceeds Morocco's by over 24 percent, representing a larger demographic and economic base. The country ranks tenth globally in natural gas production and holds the top position in Africa for this resource, making it a key energy supplier. Algeria is also a significant global player in oil production, ranking 17th worldwide. In contrast, Morocco imports between 90 and 94 percent of its energy needs, noting its energy dependence. The Institute also noted Algeria's substantial military capabilities, noting its defense budget exceeds 21 billion US dollars, which is four times larger than Morocco's defense budget. This significant military strength positions Algeria as a formidable regional power. The Institute for Hispano Studies further mentioned Algeria's revolutionary legacy, citing its successful defeat of French colonial power, emphasizing its history of independence and self-determination.

Geopolitical Motivations and Historical Context

The article claims the Moroccan regime plays a functional role for the Zionist entity and the United States, asserting it seeks revenge against the Spanish government led by Pedro Sánchez. This alleged motive stems from Spain's stance on Gaza and its position regarding the aggression against Iran. Additionally, the article states that the Moroccan regime obtained its independence through the 'Évian Accords', which it suggests maintained its loyalty to France. This historical context is presented to contrast with Algeria's post-independence trajectory. In contrast, Algeria adopted an anti-imperialist and anti-Zionist diplomatic doctrine following its independence. This doctrine has guided its foreign policy, leading it to support various liberation causes. Algeria supports liberation causes, including the Sahrawi and Palestinian causes, aligning its foreign policy with movements for self-determination and against perceived colonial or occupying powers.
