The summons followed Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani's call earlier on Thursday to suspend Spain's participation in the Schengen Area. Tajani stated he supported closing the Schengen Area to Spain, linking this measure directly to the migratory crisis in Ceuta. This controversial proposal quickly drew a strong reaction from Madrid. On X, Tajani explicitly wrote, "Je suis favorable à la fermeture de l’espace Schengen à l’Espagne," making his stance clear on the matter. The Italian Minister also asserted that images from Ceuta demonstrated "à quel point la décision du gouvernement de Madrid d’accorder la nationalité espagnole, et donc européenne, à plus de 500 000 immigrés en situation irrégulière est profondément erronée et encourage le trafic d’êtres humains." He argued that Madrid's decision to grant nationality to over 500,000 irregular immigrants was erroneous and, in his view, actively encouraged human trafficking. Tajani's remarks suggested that Spain's domestic policies on immigration were directly contributing to the current crisis and undermining European security.

Thousands of young Moroccans gathered near the border separating Castillejos, Morocco, and Ceuta on Thursday.
