The Dar El Beida Court has scheduled September 1 for the opening of a case involving the smuggling of gold bars and cash abroad. Twelve defendants are being prosecuted in connection with the alleged scheme. The accused individuals are slated to appear before the misdemeanor division of the Dar El Beida Court for their proceedings, where the intricacies of the alleged illicit operation will be examined.
Details of the Seizure
The case originated on February 19, 2025, when border police were processing Turkish Airlines flight TK0654. The flight was scheduled for Istanbul International Airport. Officers intercepted a passenger identified as B. Reda at the final boarding checkpoint, Departure Gate 07 at the Western International Terminal (T4), which leads directly to the aircraft via Tunnel 16. Authorities stated that B. Reda was caught attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of gold and undeclared foreign currency. This interception marked a critical moment in uncovering the broader alleged smuggling network.
The seized items were reportedly concealed within his shoes and underwear, as well as in the inner pockets of an elastic fabric belt fastened around his waist. Law enforcement officials confiscated 14 rectangular gold bars, described as varying in size (small, medium, and large), which bore no official hallmark or other identifying stamps. The lack of official markings on the gold bars is a key element in the prosecution's case. The total weight of the gold was reported to be 9.590 kilograms (9,590 grams). Additionally, authorities seized cash in multiple foreign currencies. These included more than €10,000, 3,065 Turkish liras, £200 sterling, £400 Egyptian pounds, 200 Saudi riyals, and 700 UAE dirhams. The substantial amount of both gold and foreign currency shows the scale of the alleged smuggling attempt.
Alleged Smuggling Scheme
The gold involved in the alleged scheme was reportedly transported following a prearranged plan, subsequently sent to clandestine workshops in Turkey. There, it was melted down and reshaped before being stamped with the Italian “Goldy” brand. This process suggests a sophisticated operation designed to obscure the origin of the gold and facilitate its entry into legitimate markets. The operation is said to have involved the complicity of several employees, including airport security personnel. These security personnel allegedly facilitated the passage of contraband through various checkpoints at Houari Boumediene International Airport. Their alleged involvement notes a potential breach in airport security protocols. In exchange for their assistance, they reportedly received benefits, gifts, and sums of money. These payments are said to have reached DZD 4 million Algerian, indicating a significant financial incentive for their alleged participation in the illicit activities. The coordination required for such a scheme points towards an organized criminal group.
Charges and Legal Framework
The charges against the defendants encompass a range of offenses, including smuggling and the illegal importation of gold jewelry. Prosecutors allege money laundering through the use of facilities provided by a professional activity, indicating the involvement of an organized criminal group. This specific charge suggests that the alleged illicit gains were being integrated into the financial system through seemingly legitimate means. Additionally, the accused face violations of legislation and regulations governing foreign exchange and the movement of capital to and from abroad. These violations are central to the economic aspects of the alleged criminal enterprise.
The prosecution has also brought charges for failure to issue invoices, suggesting attempts to obscure financial transactions, and abuse of influence, which points to the alleged complicity of individuals in positions of authority. The charge of abuse of influence is particularly significant as it implies that the alleged perpetrators leveraged their official capacities to facilitate the smuggling operation. These charges collectively outline a complex operation aimed at illicit financial gain through the circumvention of national and international regulations, showing the severity of the case to be heard by the Dar El Beida Court.
